Minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects over 500 million men worldwide. While men can select from a variety of treatment options—from medication to major surgery—there has been a gap in the treatment continuum for a less invasive option.
Prostatic Urethral Lift using the UroLift® System was designed to meet this need. With its unique design and mechanism of action, the UroLift® System is a straightforward treatment that provides immediate, visible results. (Source: https://de.urolift.com/en/physicians/procedure-device)
The UroLift® System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift® permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. How Does The UroLift® System Work?
The UroLift® System uses a revolutionary approach to treating BPH that lifts and holds the enlarged prostate tissue so it no longer blocks the urethra.
The treatment does not require ongoing medication, heating, cutting or removal of the prostate tissue.
Enlarged Prostate
An enlarged prostate can narrow or even block the urethra.
Step 1
The UroLift Delivery Device is placed through the obstructed urethra to access the enlarged prostate.
Step 2
Small UroLift Implants are permanently placed to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way and increase the opening of the urethra.
Step 3
The UroLift Delivery Device is removed, leaving an open urethra designed to provide symptom relief.
UroLift® System Procedure Animation
The UroLift® applicator is inserted into the urethra under vision together with a cystoscope and 2-3 implants on each side are pushed into the urethra through the outer wall of the prostate. The thread is shortened accordingly so that the tension between the two anchor parts pulls open the urethra.
Urolift® is a disposable device. The UroLift® Cystoscope, Sheath and Visual Obturator supplied by SCHÖLLY can be reprocessed.
SCHÖLLY’s role
In cooperation with the customer, SCHÖLLY developed a unique exclusive cystoscope, with a main focus on handling during the UroLift® procedure.
SCHÖLLY manufactures the cystoscopes and accessories that are required for endoscopic visualization during use. In addition, SCHÖLLY supplies the appropriate instruments for correcting or removing the implant.
The project took 18 months from kick-off to product registration in the US and EU.
